live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.

in a little bit, but we asked sort of the remaining undecided or sort of soft romney/obama voters, we asked them, tell us what is a hesitation you have about romney becoming president, what is a hesitation you have about obama becoming president? almost universally the hesitations on romney, even among voters who clearly sound like they're eventually going to support romney, is the idea that he's out of touch, that he seems to not understand what it's like to be a middle class american. and that's where, you know, this 47% alone wouldn't have had this kind of resonance if it hadn't been what has been a i would argue a six-month campaign by the obama folks starting with tax returns. frankly, you had the republican primary candidates did it to him. you throw it all together, defining him as the out of touch rich guy. rick santorum did it during the primaries. the obama campaign has been doing it, and then 47% comes along and simply amplifies the narrative in a third party verification-type way, and you put the whole suit together, and that to me ishurdle right now for romney, the idea is he i

until the first of three presidential debates between president obama and governor romney. a national poll out today finds that 93 percent of likely voters say they do plan to watch the debate. the same survey finds that president obama ahead nationally 49 percent to 45 percent which is just outside the margin of error. those polled rank the economy as the most important issue. on that, the two candidates are in a tie. governor romney leads when it comes to the handling of the budget deficit. however, the president is ahead on every other issue including health care and national security. we have team fox coverage. carl cameron has the latest from the romney campaign. first, we go to ed henry in las vegas. what do we know about the president's debate prep? >>reporter: they have tried to keep that quiet. we have spotted senator john kerry who is playing mitt romney in the mock debate sessions for the president in the las vegas area. he has been spotted in the lobby of the hotel, with reading glasses and a pile of papers, going through this like it is a final exam and researching every
